Welcome to Slackpacking at Bucklands...
Have you heard of the term Slack packing? It’s a new way for guests to enjoy and explore nature by walking and hiking without the fuss of walking miles with heavy backpacks filled with heavy kit. The pace is yours to decide and the distances easy to cover in the planned time.
Who would enjoy Slack packing? Anyone who enjoys walking and hiking and who enjoys nature and who would like to experience nature in a different more personal way.
Slack packing allows you, the guest, to walk and hike +- 26 km through a game reserve over 2 days with an experienced guide. Bucklands staff will take care of all food and meal preparations as well as the moving of your entire luggage to and from the different lodges. The only items you will need to carry with you would be a small back pack with water, binoculars, birding book, sunblock and a camera.
We cater for groups of 4 to 8 guests sharing (if there are more than 4 walkers we will need to split up into 2 groups, each with their own guide during the hiking, so that there is little disturbance to the wildlife).
The first afternoon hike of +-6km takes you from our Bucklands Reception via stunning views to the historic Semaphore Tower site and then through grassland and thicket vegetation to our Luxury Tented Camp. At the camp a welcome drink will await you on the deck after which you a free to relax, enjoying the pool, the boma fire, or your deck in front of your tent. Our staff will then treat you to a sumptuous three course dinner after which you can relax around the fire before retiring to your luxurious bed.
Day 2 starts with a light breakfast followed by about 8km of winding walk through valleys and over ridges where you will get up close and personal to the diverse wildlife and vegetation on the Reserve. You will then be treated to a picnic lunch at a view site overlooking the Great Fish River where you can rest for a short while before continuing on a further 8 km hike winding down to our Rustic tented camp nestled in the acacia forest on the banks of the river. Here you will again be treated with something cool to drink followed by a splash and dip in the Great Fish River rapids and then you will be transferred up to the Bucklands Lodge where you will be treated to delicious three course dinner and sleep in our renovated settler homestead.
Day 3 starts with a walk along our cliffs along our open areas where varied species of our plains game antelope are often seen. After the morning walk an inviting brunch is served at the Bucklands Lodge before departure.
